A Letter from President Ungar

Dear Goucher College Faculty and Staff,

As we get ready to launch our 2006 United Way Campaign, I want to thank you for your support of this worthy cause in past years. Generous contributions from employees of Goucher College have helped make our community a better place to live and work.

I encourage you to continue that level of support this year. Your United Way gift goes directly to programs in our community that benefit all of us when we need it most. All year long, United Way of Central Maryland provides funds to nonprofit programs that generate tangible results, supporting basic human needs, family safety, school readiness, and youth achievement.

This year, Marcie Ermer has kindly volunteered to chair our 2006 campaign, which kicks off Monday, October 30, with the ambitious goal of raising $15,000. With our active involvement and commitment to the community, I know we can reach this goal.

While numerical targets are useful in any fundraising endeavor, it’s important to bear in mind that Goucher’s United Way effort translates into real programs and services for people in our community every day. It means young children get a jumpstart on education, and teenagers get the help they need to graduate and go to college. It is a safety net in case of unexpected crisis, as well as a means to make sure families feel safe from violence and abuse. It is also a way to bring food, shelter, and clothing to people who lack these basic necessities.

Spelling Bee

The United Way Campaign kicked off with spelling bee Monday, October 30 at 11:30 a.m. in Buchner Hall.  Cherlyn Cleavenger won the event with "zephyr."  Click here for a gallery of snapshots from the event.
