How to Use SonicWall Email Security

SonicWall Email Security is a solution that blocks most of the junk email from entering your inbox.  This solution provides very good email protection, however, there may be times when adjustments are needed to improve its functionality.  SonicWall Email Security allows each person to log in to their own account and view what emails are being caught as spam through a web interface. Additionally, users can make setting changes, view reports and allow or block certain types of email addresses or groups.

Please note that some spam may still come through to your inbox.  If you do find spam,  please forward them to spam@goucher.edu in order to improve how we block junk or unsolicited e-mail (spam) to the campus.  The information found in the forwarded messages will be used to update our SPAM definitions and protect us from future unwanted mailings.

The SonicWall Email Security interface is accessed using a web browser.

  • Type http://spam.goucher.edu in the web browser’s address field and hit Enter on your keyboard.  This should bring up the login page.
  • You will then type in your user name and password that you use to check your email and login to the network. Make sure that GCADMIN is listed in the Login To: field.
  • Then click Login.

Junk Box

Once you’ve logged on, you will see the Junk Box view which lists all the emails that have been caught by the server.  You can use the search feature to view only spam emails, emails that are likely spam, emails that are likely phishing and more.  Or you can manually go through the list and click on the link to view the content of the email.  If you find an email that is not junk, select the checkbox next the email and click on the Unjunk button to have the email placed in your inbox and the sender added to your safe sender list.

Anti-Spam Techniques

The anti-spam techniques view allows you to allow or block certain email addresses, companies, list groups and foreign languages.

People – This section give you the option to allow or block individual email addresses.

Companies – This section give you the option to allow or block a company address or domain.  For instance, if you are getting a lot of email from @junk.com you can type in junk.com as a company name that you would liked block. Alternatively, if you would like to receive all email from @somecollege.edu, you can add that to your allowed list.

Lists – If you belong to a list such as Yahoo groups or a hosted list server, you can add the email address to make sure that all emails from that group are sent directly to your inbox.

Anti-Spam Aggressiveness – This option is using the default server options set by Computing Services.  However, you can override the settings by un-checking the Adhere to Corporate defaults checkbox and manually changing the settings. For example, if you tend to receive a lot of emails with gambling references, you can increase the aggressiveness from Medium to Strong for the Gambling setting.

Foreign Languages – This section works similar to the Anti-Spam Aggressiveness in that you can override the default settings if you are receiving emails in a foreign language that you are not familiar with.

Settings

In the Settings view you can manage spam, add/remove delegates and setup a junk box summary.

Spam Management – This feature allows you to disable the spam filter for your account, and change the tag phrase of definite and most likely spam.

Delegate – This feature allows users to have someone else manage their spam filter accounts on their behalf.  Simply, add the email address of the person that you would like to manage your account.

Junk Box Summary – The default for this feature is set to disabled.  If you would like a summary of all the emails that were caught as potential spam sent to your inbox then un-check the Adhere to Corporate defaults.  You will then be able to set when and how often you would like to receive summaries.  If you have delegates setup, you can choose to have the summaries sent to the delegates.

Reports

In the Reports view you can see how much spam SonicWall Email Security catches for all of Goucher.  There’s also a breakdown of what type of junk email the program filters monthly, daily and even hourly. These numbers are pretty amazing.
