Power Saving Initiatives
Problem:There are approximately 1200 public, faculty, and staff computers on campus plus another 1400-1500 personal computers all of which increases Goucher’s carbon footprint.
Solution: We suggest adjusting computer power management options to a level that works best for you. For instance, you can set the monitor to go into sleep mode after 30 minutes of no use and the hard drive after an hour. The Power Options picture below shows typical power settings for a laptop.
Despite use of the power management features, computers still drain electricity. We ask that Faculty/Staff shut down computers at the end of the week and students shut down personal machines when not in use.
Outcome:Computers allowed to shut down and cool off periodically have longer life, reducing need for more manufacturing, saving money and energy.
