Among Goucher’s rare books is an American first edition of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit, published in 1938. On Saturday, September 26, Goucher will hold a cover-to-cover reading of the book in honor of its 72nd anniversary. Students, staff, faculty, and alumni will read portions of the book.
The readings will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Hyman Forum of the Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.
Digital images of the illustrations from this edition will be projected on screens for the audience, and dancers from Chorégraphie Antique will perform around 11 a.m.
Please see http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng330/reading_aloud_the_1938_hobbit.htm to view the schedule.
Contact Arnie Sanders at asanders@goucher.edu for more information or if you would like to participate. The full-hour readings are between 27 and 32 pages. If more than one person asks to read any one chapter, the reading will be divided into two or more episodic segments.
