Physics senior Adrien Thormann spent his summer working on science policy issues on Capitol Hill

Adrien Thormann, Goucher College senior with a major in physics, spent this past summer working on science policy issues on Capitol Hill.  Adrien was the only science intern in the Congressional Committe on Science and Technology.  He was assigned to work on several projects of major interest for the scientific and technological  future of our country including governmental support for space and aeronautics research; future Lunar governance; public transportation and oil drilling. In the course of his internship he met 13 astronauts from the Apollo era, including Senator John Glen, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins, as well as Charlie Bolden, the NASA administrator.

Adrien also attended hearings and markups in the House of Congress , including

• The restoration of NEHRP (national earthquake hazards reduction program),
• The problem of oil spill which was a fascinating debate between Democrats and  Republicans
• The discussion and the voting on the amendments on the Climate Change bill, or known as the Waxman-Markey bill.

Adrien Thormann will talk about his experience working on the Capitol Hill on Friday, September 25th at 3:30pm in the Kelley Lecture Hall. His presentation will be the first  in the Hoffberger Science Seminar Series organized jointly by the Natural Science and Mathematics Division and the Lecture and Fellowship Committee.
