Baltimore City Public School Partnerships:
The Goucher - Dr. Bernard Harris Sr. Elementary School Project originated out of a tragic incident in fall 2002, when four Bernard Harris students who were brothers perished with their family in a house fire set by local drug lords. The fire was set in retribution against efforts by the mother, Angela Dawson, to rid the block of drugs. The Goucher-Bernard Harris partnership is themed: Believers are Dreamkeepers, in honor of the Dawson Family. The Partnership includes projects where Goucher students train 4th and 5th graders in conflict resolution, and basic skills in community arts and theatre. Goucher students from peace studies, art, theatre and English work across disciplines on this project.
The Goucher - Robert Poole High School Project started in spring 2003, as a response to the breaking up of Northern High School and the creation of four smaller schools. Robert Poole in the Hampden Neighborhood is a new school with 9th and 10th graders. Goucher students will be working with Robert Poole students on hip-hop culture, media literacy and after-school tutoring.
The Goucher - Margaret Brent Project is a new project fall 2003, in response to the school's endeavor to stem school violence. This conflict-resolution project will introduce students to the Old Goucher neighborhood where Margaret Brent is located, to the world of service learning, and to conflict resolution techniques.
The Goucher - Patterson Park High School Latino Empowerment Project stems from the efforts of a Goucher alumnae to establish a Latino leadership program in Patterson Park, which is home to a growing number of Latino immigrants. Students will be working with Patterson Park High School students, parents and High School staff on Latino leadership and empowerment issues.
