Student Work Opportunities

The department offers several kinds of on-campus employment to its students, including:

  • Paper grading. Almost all of the freshman and sophomore classes have homework assignments which can be graded by students. Apply to the department chair during the first few days of either semester.
  • Calculus lab assistant. Calculus I and II include a two-hour computer lab each week. Students are directed in their work by the instructor and a student assistant. Apply to the department chair during the first few days of either semester.
  • Monitoring in a computer laboratory. Monitors check malfunctioning equipment, answer questions about hardware and software and otherwise assist students in computer labs. Apply to Jeff Samuels in the Thormann Center.
  • Tutoring Goucher students. Students who wish to be tutored in mathematics or computer science ask the Academic Center for Excellence for a list of qualified tutors for private tutoring or attend evening Math Lab which is monitored by mathematics tutors. To apply to be a tutor or to work in the Math Lab, contact the Academic Center for Excellence, Froelicher Hall.
  • Departmental assistant. This student assists the chairperson with clerical chores such as photocopying, maintaining the departmental bulletin board and databases, acquiring library books, and with special tasks such as typesetting this handbook. Apply to the department chair at the beginning of either semester.

All of the above kinds of work pay at the hourly rate prevailing throughout the College for student work. Due to the specialized nature of some of the jobs, it is not required that student employees qualify for work-study.

Another employment opportunity is that of tutoring students from outside the college. There are often high school students in the area who need tutoring in secondary mathematics. Information about such positions is announced in appropriate classes as it becomes available, and posted here.
