Admission

The admissions committee looks for students who have demonstrated the ability to succeed in Goucher's rigorous liberal arts curriculum and to contribute meaningfully as individuals to our vibrant and diverse campus community.

Goucher is particularly well-suited to students eager to explore a wide range of knowledge across a wide variety of disciplines. The most successful Goucher students prize discussion and debate, seek out and participate in educational opportunities outside the classroom as well as within it, and value close, personal interaction and collaboration with faculty and other students alike.

The application deadline for fall admission is February 1. Notification of all applicants takes place on or before April 1. Students who wish to apply under the non-binding Early Action Plan should complete their applications by December 1 and will be notified by February 1. Submission of test scores (SAT or ACT with writing) is optional when applying for admission, though .

Students may also apply for the binding Early Decision plan. Early Decision is right for you if you know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Goucher is your number one choice and if you don’t need to compare offers of financial assistance. Know that we treat students admitted through our Early Decision options the same way we treat the rest of our admitted applicant pool as far as merit and need-based financial assistance is concerned. You can apply to only one college or university as an Early Decision candidate, and if admitted, the binding nature of Early Decision requires you to enroll and withdraw applications to all other colleges or universities. Admission applications for the Early Decision program must be submitted before November 15 (to be notified by December 15) or before January 15 (to be notified by February 15.

Goucher College has adopted an admissions test optional program, where test score (SAT Reasoning Test, SAT II, and ACT with writing) submission is optional when applying for admission to Goucher College. First-year applicants will be prompted to indicate preference for use of test scores in determining admission, using the Common Application supplement for Goucher College. Applicants can elect to have previously submitted test scores used in the process of determining admission, or may elect not to have submitted scores used to determine admission. Test scores must be submitted to be considered for merit funding.

Financial Assistance Programs

Goucher offers a comprehensive financial aid program of need-based and merit-based assistance. It is designed to recognize outstanding talent and to put a Goucher education within reach of anyone who has the desire and ability to pursue an academic career here. We expect you and your family to contribute to the financing of your education to the degree that you are able, and you may need to make some sacrifices to do so. But we are also committed to working with every qualified student to provide assistance in covering the difference between the limits of your financial resources and the total cost of your education here.

Approximately 90 percent of Goucher students receive some type of financial assistance. In total, they were awarded more than $23 million in financial aid in 2003-04 through some combination of need-based grants, merit scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities. In 2003-04 the average aid award was about $19,800.

Goucher requires the CSS Profile and Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Both forms must be submitted to each processor no later than February 15. For additional information contact:

Merit Scholarship Programs

Goucher awards many merit-based scholarships to incoming students each year. Designed to reward and encourage our brightest and most talented applicants--and make Goucher a very realistic choice for your education--these awards are based on your academic achievements and leadership in high school. They do not take into account financial need. Last year, these scholarships ranged from $5,000 to $25,750 (full tuition) annually.

Global Citizen Scholarships:

Awarded on the basis of academic credentials, special talents, and other factors, these scholarships ranged between $8,500 and $12,500 last year. Of the students offered this award last year, the top quarter had high school GPAs of 3.73 and above (in core academic subjects only, cumulative for grades 9 through 12); the bottom quarter had GPAs of 3.27 and below. The combined verbal and math SAT I scores for this group averaged 1287, with the top quarter scoring 1360 and above and the bottom quarter scoring 1210 and below. Global Citizen scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters. The renewal requirements include full-time enrollment and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Dean's Scholarships:

This is Goucher's most prestigious merit scholarship, awarded in amounts totaling $18,000 or the equivalent of first-year full-tuition ($25,750 in 2004-2005). We will consider as prospective recipients all students who have distinguished themselves through superior academic achievements, extracurricular leadership, and other accomplishments. Last year's recipients had a mean secondary school GPA of 3.87 (in core academic subjects only, cumulative for grades 9 through 12) and average SAT I combined scores of 1,433. They also completed a rigorous program of study in high school. Dean's Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters. The renewal requirements include full-time enrollment and a minimum GPA of 3.25.

Fine and Performing Arts Scholarships:

To reward and promote strong potential and talent in the arts, Goucher awards Rosenberg Scholarships in Music, Dance, and Visual Art and Wilhelm Scholarships in Theatre to new and returning students of high academic standing who demonstrate strong leadership qualities and a strong commitment to further developing their artistic talent. The scholar must enroll in college in the fall after the award is offered. The Fine and Performing Arts Scholarships are one-year awards in the amount of $5,000. For more detailed information, please contact the Admissions Office.

Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS):

CSEMS support academically talented students with substantial demonstrated financial need who pursue professional careers in the technology-based sciences. Only students with a high school grade point average (as recalculated by the Admissions Office) of 3.00 or higher and SAT Reasoning Test scores of 1,100 or higher will be considered as prospective recipients. We will also take into account non-academic strengths, including time-management and communication skills and the overall maturity needed to undertake an intensive science curriculum. The scholarship, valued at $3,125 annually, is renewable for up to four years provided recipients remain in good academic standing and enrolled in a technology-based major.

The college reserves the right to change or cancel, without notice, programs of study, requirements, course offerings, policies, regulations, procedures, calendar, financial aid, fees and other matters. The information presented here is not to be regarded as a contract.
