"The kinds of questions that anthropology addresses about the human condition are, I believe, among the most important kinds of questions that we can ask in life. When we turn our attention to why humans behave the way they do or believe in what they believe, we generate real possibilities for acting empathetically in the world."
Carolyn Schwarz
Associate ProfessorSociology and Anthropology
I am an anthropologist with interests in health and health care, well-being, and religious identity. Over the last nine years, my research has focused on faith-based health care delivery in the United States. I have taken an ethnographic approach to studying medical bill sharing ministries and am currently researching the work of health care providers in faith-based medical clinics. My teaching includes courses on anthropological theory and method, the anthropology of well-being, the human life course, food and nutrition, medicine and healing, and the health care system in the United States.
