Dr. Draheim Publishes New Research on Suicidality in the LGBT+ Community
Dr. Amanda Draheim, Assistant Professor of Psychology, recently published an article in the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services entitled, “Suicidality and discriminatory experiences with healthcare providers in LGBT emerging adults”.
Dr. Draheim has been collaborating with Dr. Lara Stepleman's research team at Augusta University since starting her internship at the Augusta Consortium in 2020. Dr. Draheim writes, “This work has allowed me to develop greater competence in my ability to conduct research with minoritized groups as well as deepening my foundation in topics that I teach including health psychology and human sexuality. I have a lot of fun working with this group and consider the research I do with them to be a form of self-care. Our latest publication examines the association between healthcare discrimination experiences and suicidality among LGBTQ+ emerging adults (ages 18-24). Our findings suggest that gender-based discrimination from healthcare providers accounted for significant variability in suicidality in our sample before the recent wave of anti-trans legislation began. We believe that healthcare providers have a powerful opportunity for beneficence and nonmaleficence through provision of LGBTQ+ affirmative care.”
