The Goucher community, and the psychology program in particular, congratulate Dr. Gillian Starkey (she/her) for earning tenure and promotion to Associate Professor earlier this year (press release here). Dr. Starkey came to Goucher in 2016 to fill our newly created tenure-track line in Human Neuroscience. She teaches courses including Introduction to Psychology, Neuroscience, Seminar in Educational Neuroscience, and a popular Complex Problem Explorations (CPE) course on The Addicted Brain: America’s Opioid Crisis. In 2019, she won the Excellence in Teaching Award for a non-tenured faculty member. Dr. Starkey established the first cognitive neuroscience lab at Goucher, using electroencephalography (EEG, ERP) to record electrical activity from neurons via scalp electrodes, in order to investigate how adults think about numbers, and how children acquire and develop numeracy skills. Dr. Starkey is also an outstanding mentor to students on her research team, resulting in 10+ conference posters and other peer-reviewed works. Join us in congratulating Dr. Starkey on this accomplishment!
Gillian Starkey
Assistant Professor of Psychology
Gillian Starkey teaches courses in human neuroscience, brain development and education, and the neurobiological basis of addiction. A cognitive neuroscientist by training, her research uses electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neural underpinnings of numerical fluency and math development. Her courses and scholarship emphasize neuroscience as an important interdisciplinary tool for understanding and addressing real-world issues, including educational access and public health inequities.
