During Blue and Gold Weekend, this year’s class of inductees includes three former student-athletes and the 1994 field hockey team as the college’s fourth Team of Distinction.
The Goucher College Athletics Hall of Fame inducted its 2024 class during Blue and Gold Weekend on Friday, October 18. This year’s class, the 15th since the Athletics Hall of Fame began in 2010, consists of three former student-athletes and the 1994 field hockey team as the College’s fourth Team of Distinction.
lacrosse All-American and field hockey standout Crystal Lynette Butcher '97, women's cross country and track and field's All-Region performer Fraley Coles Tilghman '08 and four-time men's tennis All-Conference selection Seth Hoesman '16 comprised this year’s class.
Butcher, originally from El Cajon, California, was a standout for the successful Goucher women's lacrosse and field hockey teams of the mid-1990s. In women's lacrosse Butcher earned third team All-America honors in 1996 in goal, recording 262 saves and a .593 save percentage for the Gopher squad that reached the NCAA Division III Final Four. A two-time All-Region and two-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection, Butcher ranks second in program history with 656 career saves, while her .601 save percentage is No. 3 in the program record books. In field hockey Butcher earned First Team All-Conference accolades in 1996 and totaled a goal and 10 assists for 12 points along with 15 defensive saves in her career.
Tilghman, hailing from The Plains, Virginia, is Goucher's lone female qualifier to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. A four-time All-Conference (3x CAC, 1X Landmark) performer, Coles finished fifth at the CAC Championship as a freshman and seventh at the Landmark Championship as a senior to earn First Team accolades. A two-time All-Region honoree, Coles qualified for nationals as a senior. In track and field, Coles was the Capital Athletic Conference champion in the 5,000 meters and finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a freshman.
Hoesman, who came to Goucher from nearby Ellicott City, Maryland and Howard High School, was a seven-time First Team All-Landmark selection in men's tennis for the Gophers from 2013-16, earning First Team in doubles all four seasons and First Team in singles three times, along with Second Team in 2015. Over his four seasons, Hoesman compiled a 61-25 singles record (21-9 Landmark) and a 59-29 (22-6 Landmark) record in doubles. The 2016 Landmark Tournament MVP as the Gophers captured their first conference title in program history, Hoseman currently ranks No. 4 in singles wins and No. 3 in doubles wins, having graduated as the program leader in both.
The 1994 field hockey team finished with a 15-4-1 record, including a 4-1 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Gophers, coached by future Syracuse national championship coach Andrea "Ange" Bradley, captured the CAC title with a 3-0 win over Salisbury to earn the program's first NCAA berth. Current Goucher Athletic Hall of Fame members Michele Mohlman Dombrowski '96 and Chrissy Czajowski '96 earned All-America honors from that year's squad, while the Gophers had a total of six CAC All-Conference selections. Butcher and Dawn Greer Foster '97 are also Hall of Fame members who played on the team.
