Julie Chernov Hwang on Combatting Extremism in Indonesia
Professor Julie Chernov Hwang writes on extremists in Indonesia
Julie Chernov Hwang, Goucher associate professor of political science and international relations, wrote an article for Lawfare Blog earlier this month warning of unintended consequences of Indonesia's amendment of its 2003 anti-terrorism law.
Chernov Hwang, who researches why people join and leave terrorist groups, also wrote about the danger of simply banning Islamist extremist groups earlier this year in the Washington Post. She has a book coming out, Why Terrorists Quit: The Disengagement of Indonesian Jihadists in February of 2018. Earlier in 2017, she was awarded a grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation, to study the pathways through which people join Islamist extremist groups in Indonesia and Malaysia.
