Goucher students earn national certification

Two Goucher College students have received certification from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The nationally recognized achievement was earned by Isabella Davis ’20, a biochemistry and molecular biology major and philosophy minor, who received certification with distinction, and Lucas Muya ’20, a biochemistry and molecular biology major, who received certification.

“Goucher faculty get to know their students as individuals thanks to the small class sizes, and can help students in STEM achieve their maximum potential,” said Judy Levine, Biological Sciences and Chemistry Professor. “We are so proud of Isabella, Lucas, and all the rest of the biochemistry and molecular biology class of 2020. We look forward to hearing about their future accomplishments.”

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology accredits Goucher’s major in biochemistry and molecular biology. Students in the program take a comprehensive exam in the spring of their senior year. If they perform well enough, they receive the certification of their degree from ASBMB; those who perform exceptionally well receive the certification with distinction. 

In a statement from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the organization said that of the 926 students in ASBMB-accredited programs who took the exam nationwide, only 374 (40.4%) achieved certification. A total of 154 of these (16.6%) achieved the certification with distinction.
