Goucher College breaks ground on the Judy C. Lewent '70 Science Center
The cutting-edge Lewent Science Center will be a LEED-rated 44,000-square foot development. The $50 million project is slated to open in Fall 2027.
Goucher College celebrated the groundbreaking of The Judy C. Lewent ’70 Science Center on April 24, 2025, in front of a crowd of more than 100 students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, community leaders, and government officials. Aruna Miller, Maryland Lieutenant Governor; Ben Cardin, former U.S. Senator; Cathi Forbes, Maryland House of Delegates; and Katherine Klausmeier, Baltimore County Executive joined Kent Devereaux, Goucher College President, and Robert Bull Jr. ’93, Board of Trustees member and [UNDAUNTED] Campaign Chair for the historic moment.
The cutting-edge Lewent Science Center will be a LEED-rated 44,000-square foot annex to the Hoffberger Science building and will offer state-of-the-art labs and learning spaces designed to power the future of science and propel generations of students to success. The $50 million project is slated to open in Fall 2027.
“As one of the first colleges in the country to offer science classes to women and with nearly every current student taking a science course, Goucher continues to build on its innovative history with the new Lewent Science Center as a place of discovery for generations of students to come,” said Goucher College President Kent Devereaux. “Our graduates are global changemakers, and the knowledge they acquire here will impact our region and beyond as they pursue careers and advanced degrees while making a meaningful impact on their communities.”
The Lewent Science Center will allow for the expansion of faculty and student research opportunities. Classes in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, applied math, data analytics, cognitive psychology, and computer science will take place in the new space.
“The Lewent Science Center will allow Goucher to continue its long tradition of educating future leaders in science and medicine,” says George Greco, Goucher College professor and chair of the chemistry department. “We will be able to teach students using cutting edge pedagogy and provide them with the opportunity to work on high impact research projects.”
The new facility will allow for the expansion of Goucher’s Summer Science Research program, which offers undergraduate students hands-on research experience in the lab under the supervision of faculty members. Hands-on programs like these allow students to apply concepts that are learned in the classroom in the lab setting. The new Lewent Science Center will also provide an opportunity for Goucher’s prestigious Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program to grow and help prepare more students to study medicine.
