Creativity meets technology in the new Makerspace
Creativity meets technology in Goucher College’s new Makerspace, which is now open in room 422 of the Ungar Athenaeum. A “makerspace” is a type of communal workshop, and the one at Goucher has a number of tools and options for a range of projects, from artisanal woodworking to robotics engineering.
The Makerspace has a state-of-the-art 3D laser cutter for wood and vinyl cuttings, a 3D scanner for digital art, and multiple 3D printers for making models and prototypes. The workshop also has tools for wood crafting and an electronics lab for soldering and robotics projects.
The space is organized and maintained by Educational Developer Jamie Batts and Digital Arts and Technology Specialist Jared Paolini from Goucher’s Center for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching (CAST). “We eagerly anticipate welcoming students to unleash their creativity and encouraging faculty to explore new ideas, using this equipment to enhance learning beyond the classroom,” said Batts.
The Makerspace is currently open to students on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m., but CAST will be expanding the hours depending on the demand. The plan is to make it available for class projects and individual ones. Faculty, students, and other campus community members will be welcome to use it.
