Welcome to Goucher

Dear Goucher Parents and Friends,

I hope you and your family have found some respite from the relenting heat nationwide this summer and that you are as excited as we are about starting a new academic year at Goucher College this fall.

This year will be my fifth as Goucher College’s president, and each year I find myself more excited than ever to see our students back on campus enjoying the benefits of a Goucher education, whether that’s living on campus and enjoying the benefits of a residential college experience, participating in Landmark Conference athletic competition, or taking advantage of the many experiential learning opportunities we provide our students, from internships with local companies and nonprofit organizations to study abroad experiences in any one of 60 countries.

This year, I’m especially excited about these developments:

• Once again, this year’s incoming class is larger than last year’s. It’s also more geographically and racially diverse than ever, with 70% of our domestic students coming from out of state and 47% identifying as non-white.
• We’re also happy to see a continued increase in our international student population—our largest ever—with 65 students from 34 countries attending Goucher this fall.
• Our faculty have expanded our academic program offerings in multiple ways, with new undergraduate majors in data science, digital arts, and, very soon, neuroscience; we’ve also launched three new graduate programs in environmental sustainability and management, digital communication, and applied policy analysis that provide our students with even more graduate degree options.
• We’ve added new 4+1 and 3+2 academic partnerships with Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Loyola University of Maryland, and others that will allow our students to pursue graduate work and earn two degrees in less time, in fields such as business, engineering, and nursing—with more partnerships coming soon.

All that said, as a parent myself, I also realize that attending college can be a stressful experience for the whole family. That’s why we want to make the experience for your family as stress-free as possible. We are always happy to answer your questions, and perhaps I’ll have a chance to meet you and say hi on Move-in Day.

I encourage you also to consider attending either Family & Friends Weekend, from October 6 to 8, or Blue & Gold Weekend, from October 20 to 22. Our Student Affairs team does an excellent job putting together a rewarding program on both weekends. We’ll be sending out more details soon.
