A Welcome Message to Goucher Families
Dear Goucher Parents & Friends,
I hope you and your family are as excited as we are to see all our students return
to our lovely campus this fall. This will be my fourth year as Goucher College’s president,
and I’ve never been more excited for all our students to be back on campus this fall
and enjoying the benefits of a Goucher education, whether that’s living in our residence
halls, attending on-campus events, participating in Landmark Conference or IHSA athletic
competition, or preparing to travel abroad as part of our signature study abroad program.
We’re also excited to see a couple of new developments that portend particularly well
for the future:
- This year’s incoming class is 14% larger than last year, a trend that we expect will
continue for the next four years. This means more consistent and more varied class
offerings in all our majors as we continue to grow with students now from 48 states
across our nation.
- We’re also seeing a doubling of the number of international students this year with
over 50 students from 29 different countries attending Goucher this fall.
- Finally, we’re excited to show off the first of our completely remodeled biology labs that should give our students a peek at what’s to come in the years ahead.
All that said, as a parent myself I also realize that this time of year is not all
unicorns and rainbows. Attending college can be a stressful experience for the entire
family. I remember very vividly the unexpected rush of emotions my wife and I experienced
after dropping off our one son to attend college… and he was only attending college
in state! For those of you traveling to Goucher from afar, I wish you safe travels
and nothing but the best.
Also, I encourage you to think about attending either Blue & Gold Weekend September
23-24 and support our men’s and women’s soccer teams as they take on Drew University,
or Family & Friends Weekend October 7-9. We’ll be posting more details soon.
Finally, please be sure to regularly check out the Goucher College parent page with lots of helpful suggestions, important deadlines, and answers to the most frequently
asked questions. You can also send an email with your question to gopherfamily@goucher.edu and expect to receive a prompt response.
Meanwhile, I hope I have a chance to meet you and say hi at one of our move-in days
this week.
