Campus Construction Activity Notice
Erik Thompson
Dear Goucher Community,
I am writing to you with more exciting news about the Lewent Science Center. As shared during last Wednesday's Town Hall and via the email you received yesterday, the groundbreaking celebration is planned for April 24. However, the construction activities will start as soon as this week.
What is Happening
Work will begin inside Hoffberger to create new emergency exit paths. The hallways closest to the Green House and the stairwell adjacent to the loading dock will be reconfigured. This work will be underway for eight weeks. We anticipate completing the new exit path in early May. The hallway may be blocked for safety purposes, and those in the offices and classrooms nearby will hear drilling between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. during that eight-week period. The Facilities team is working closely with Academic Affairs to do everything we can to mitigate the negative impacts of construction.
What to Expect Leading up to Groundbreaking
In addition to the work mentioned above, we will be preparing the construction site for storing equipment and materials. We will also be building a perimeter construction fence that will have signs about Goucher and the new building.
Ongoing Impacts to Expect
When large-scale construction begins in early May, you will experience the following:
-
Parking in the Dorsey and Hoffberger lots will be impacted. Those who currently park closest to Hoffberger will need to find parking closer to Dorsey or in other camps lots. We will include additional parking impacts in future construction update emails and on the construction web page (coming soon).
-
Traffic on Loop Road will not change in the immediate term future. However, during the course of the next twenty-four months there will be periods when large trucks will deliver materials to the construction site using Loop Road. Should there be excess construction traffic anticipated, we will advise the campus in advance of the disruption.
-
You can expect a variety of construction noises on weekdays during the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Periodically there will be loud “bangs” as we commence with pile-driving and/or other structural building activities.
-
Several specialty construction crews will be on campus during the day as they complete their work to clear and prepare the construction site, place the foundation, build the structure, install equipment, and create new landscaping. We will update you as to what is happening in our occasional construction update emails.
How We Will Continue to Communicate with You
We will be communicating with you via emails such as this, and via the “Lewent Science Center Construction Updates” web page. When activated the page will include a 24/7 construction webcam so everyone can see what is happening, a campus map indicating where the ongoing impacts will be, and any recent changes in the construction’s impact on our campus community.
We will advise you when the webpage is live and will send you another update soon in the near future.
Thank you for your patience and support as we begin construction for the Lewent Science Center, which will inspire Goucher’s global changemakers in the sciences.
Regards,
Erik Thompson
