M.A. in Management Scholarships

Application Requirements

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants to the program must address the following question: What person or experience in your background has taught you the most about the field of arts administration and why? This could be about a leader you have known or worked with, a job, an observed lack of strong arts administration, a particular experience in the arts, an arts convention, etc.

This essay should be 400-600 words in length and should be submitted as part of your application package (application form, application essay, transcripts, and recommendations).

Amount Awarded per Scholarship

Scholarship amounts usually range from $2,000 - $4,500. Several scholarships are awarded each year depending on funds available.

Application Requirements

Only first-semester students are eligible to apply. To be considered for a scholarship, students must write a 500-700 word essay about their qualifications for the scholarship for which they would like to be considered. Students can apply for up to two scholarships but must write a separate essay for each. The essay must include:

• The specific title of the scholarship
• Evidence supporting your qualifications
• The relevant topical issues you are most passionate about that make you want to be known as a _______ scholar (e.g., Community Scholar, Cultural Equity Scholar, etc.).
• Your vision for the work you hope to do after graduate school and the impact you hope to have as it relates to the nature of the scholarship.

The Scholarships

Community Scholar

This scholarship is given to graduate students who demonstrate the potential for a leadership role within their own cultural community. The field of Cultural Sustainability is strengthened by the perspectives and experiences of diverse populations. We believe that the cultural traditions of some communities are in greater peril than others of losing viability, becoming invisible or disappearing altogether. For this reason, we are especially interested in encouraging scholars from under-served and under-represented communities who intend to return to those communities and apply the skills and knowledge acquired in graduate school to strengthen and sustain treasured cultural and artistic traditions.

Artist Scholar

This scholarship is given to graduate students who are first-and- foremost artists with a passion for using their creativity to make a difference in their communities. Artists have the capacity to motivate their communities to challenge conventions, offer creative solutions and imagine different stories with different outcomes. We believe in the power of story, song, dance, weaving, carving and other art forms to quietly or radically empower communities to seek sustainable ways of being in the world. All artists are welcome to apply for this scholarship, but we are especially interested in artists who practice folk and traditional art forms learned within their own community-based settings and sustained through community participation.

Cultural Equity Scholar

This scholarship is given to graduate students who are passionate about social equity issues and want to make an impact on the most critical social and cultural issues facing their communities. We believe that applying a cultural lens to challenging social issues (i.e. immigration, education, the environment or healthcare) reinforces cultural equity. As noted Ethiopian refugee artist Tessfaye Tessema once said, "Your culture makes you think like a human being." This award is for students who are committed to finding humane, culturally-aware solutions to our greatest social challenges.

Cultural Governance Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who want to make an impact by working with institutions, policies, regulations, and decision-making processes that support cultural sustainability planning efforts in communities, cultural institutions, or governmental entities. As Jon Hawkes notes, "cultural vitality is as essential to a healthy and sustainable society as social equity, environmental responsibility and economic viability," Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate an interest in discovering the practical ways in which notions of culture can be applied to public policy making.

Cross Cultural Scholar

"Men build too many walls and not enough bridges" - Isaac Newton. This scholarship is for graduate students who can demonstrate experience working across cultures, whether at the local level or the global level. Preference will be given to students who speak two or more languages, but this is not required. For our cultures to survive and thrive, we must not only sustain that which defines us, we must also be willing do the same for cultures around the world. This award will be given to students who are planning to do work that builds bridges between diverse and distinct cultures.

Amount Awarded per Scholarship

$1,000 - $1,500 per year (not to exceed $4,000 total). The award amount may vary between scholarships, but the amount awarded in the first semester will remain the same for the scholar in each subsequent semester.

Application Requirements

Students must write a 350-700 word essay about their qualifications for the scholarship for which they would like to be considered.  Links to relevant media may be included within the essay. Students can apply for up to two scholarships but must write a separate essay for each.  The essay must include:

• The title of the scholarship for which you are applying
• Evidence that supports your qualifications for the specific scholarship
• Your vision for the work you hope to do during and after graduate school as it relates to the nature of the scholarship

The Scholarships

Multimedia Art Scholar

The multimedia art scholar will demonstrate talent across multiple artistic disciplines.  They will emphasize a vision to integrate these disciplines into one interconnected medium.  The successful applicant will outline specific steps towards working across artistic disciplines.

Social Entrepreneurship Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about social entrepreneurship, who think and act with an entrepreneurial spirit, who have the ability to put a project or idea into action to benefit the greater society. This award is for students who demonstrate innovative thinking and a commitment to making positive triple bottom line impacts through their work, regardless of the type of organization they might work for: large or small, new or old, religious or secular, nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid.

Media Business Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students with an eye towards converting their creative skills into a new media business, or in further developing artistic skills that will support business interests.

New Narratives Scholar

The narrative landscape of today is a complex ecosystem of storytelling.  While the written word still plays a role, information is also disseminated through video, image, and interactive mediums.  The new narratives scholar is focused on creating narrative structures that leverage this complex landscape.

International Perspectives Fellow

This fellowship is intended for international students who wish to study the digital arts while living and working in the United States.  Students that receive this fellowship must be able to commit to working with faculty and staff in person throughout the semester. Award preference will be given to students who present a plan for self-development that includes businesses and/or artists within the local community.  Renewal of this fellowship is dependent on the student's ability to demonstrate cross-cultural learning and exchange.

Physical Computing Fellow

The Physical Computing fellowship is intended for graduate students who wish to make use of interactive physical systems in their work. It will be awarded to the student who aims to bring digital technology off the screen and into the real-world.  This fellowship requires a weekly, face-to-face meeting with an on-campus advisor for the duration of the scholarship.  Award preference will be given to students who wish to make use of on-campus resources.

The M.A. in Environmental Studies program has several different scholarships students in the program can apply for based on merit and need.  These awards exist to recruit, retain and reward academic and professional potential and personal responsibility.

• The relevant topical issues you are most passionate about that make you want to be known as a _______ scholar (e.g., Environmental Justice Scholar, Global Sustainability Scholar, etc).
• If chosen as a scholarship recipient, how will you sustain your mission and help others benefit from your experience?   What impact do you hope to make in your future work as it relates to the nature of the scholarship?

The Scholarships

Environmental Justice Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about environmental justice, activism and grassroots community organizing. Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to supporting disadvantaged communities in crafting strategies for community engagement and social action to advocate for equal protection from environmental hazards and equal access to environmental benefits like clean water and green space.

Community Impact Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about engaging & facilitating the participation of community members in addressing local adaptive challenges to environmental issues, designing strategic interventions, and making positive social change.  Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to community-based environmental actions that create more livable and sustainable communities. 

Environmental Governance Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who want to make an impact by working with institutions, policies, regulations, and decision-makings processes that affect the environment.  Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate an interest in coordinating stakeholder interests around environmental sustainability, resilience and management.

Conservation Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about environmental, wildlife, or energy conservation. Scholars who receive this award demonstrate a commitment to finding practical solutions to conservation issues by applying political, economic, communications, psychological, or community strategies to shape human behaviors in support of conservation efforts.

Eco-Entrepreneurship Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about developing green products, technologies, services, and solutions to address environmental and natural resource problems.  This is for students who are interested in using the tools of business to also promote social responsibility and the public good.  

Environmental Multimedia Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who want to have environment al impacts through the use of multimedia tools.  Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate an interest and responsibility in influencing public opinion and in shaping behavior through different modes of communication.

Global Sustainability Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who speak two or more languages and can demonstrate their global experiences and mind-set. This award is for students who are planning on working on international environmental issues.

Application Requirements

The M.A. in Historic Preservation program offers students several different scholarships to which they can apply based on merit and need.  These awards exist to reward academic and professional potential and to support personal initiative and responsibility.  

• The specific title of the scholarship
• Evidence supporting your qualifications
• The relevant topical issues you are most passionate about that make you want to be known as a _______ scholar (e.g., Urban Landscape Scholar, Community Engagement Scholar, etc).
• If chosen as a scholarship recipient, how will you articulate and sustain your mission and help others benefit from your experience?   What impact do you hope to make in your future work as it relates to the nature of the scholarship?

The Scholarships

Built Environment Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are working to protect, support, and revitalize built environments and cultural landscapes in rural settings and urban neighborhoods that present key challenges for preservation. Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to working with social, political, material, natural, technological, or cultural factors impacting successful preservation practice.

Heritage Sustainability Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are dedicated to keeping alive the values of peoples and places through structures and landscapes that sustain the passion for preservation and inspire the next generation. Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to education of the community on multiples levels and ways and advocacy with organizations and government bodies to support and maintain heritage locations and their values.

Community Engagement Scholar

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about engaging & facilitating the participation of community members in addressing local adaptive challenges and technical and legal innovations to historic preservation issues, designing strategic interventions, and making positive social change.  Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to community-oriented historic preservation actions to create more engaged communities that work to sustain their historic structures, landscapes and communities. 

Amount Awarded per Scholarship

Up to $2,000 ($500 per term).

Application Requirements

To be considered for a scholarship, students must write a 500 word essay about their qualifications for the scholarship that they would like to be considered for.  Students can apply for consideration for up to two scholarships (each scholarship requires a separate essay).  The essay must include:

• The specific title of the scholarship
• Evidence supporting your qualifications
• The relevant topical issues you are most passionate about that make you want to be known as a _______ scholar (e.g., a corporate social responsibility scholar, a social impact scholar, etc).
• John F Kennedy famously said, "Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation." If chosen as a scholarship recipient, how will you "pay it forward" so others can benefit from your experience?   What impact do you hope to make in your future work as it relates to the nature of the scholarship (e.g., social impact, environmental impact)?

The Scholarships

Corporate Social Responsibility Scholar 

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about corporate social responsibility and demonstrate outstanding leadership potential.  Scholars who receive this award will demonstrate a commitment to supporting for-profit organizations adopting a triple bottom line evaluation approach and crafting strategies related to their products and practices to benefit consumers, employees, communities, environment, and all other stakeholders.

Social Entrepreneurship Scholar 

This scholarship is for graduate students who are passionate about social entrepreneurship, who think and act with an entrepreneurial spirit, who have the ability to put a project or idea into action to benefit the greater society.  This award is for students who demonstrate innovative thinking and a commitment to making positive triple bottom line impacts through their work, regardless of the type of organization they might work for: large or small, new or old, religious or secular, nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid. 

Global Scholar 

This scholarship is for graduate students who speak two or more languages and can demonstrate their global experiences and mind-set.  This award is for students who are planning on working globally.  Students may either be interested in an issue that spans multiple regions (e.g. poverty), or on multiple issues in one region (e.g., energy and environmental issues in the Amazon), or who take a global approach to find balance between the needs and interests of individual nations and how those needs intersect with the needs of the planet.
