Web Templates & Modules

What is a web template?

Goucher College's website uses Modern Campus CMS, a robust content management system (CMS) that uses templates to build pages. Templates make it easy for people of all skill levels and backgrounds to create beautiful and informative webpages. Editors have the ability to add any type of content they choose, from basic text to images and video. The page builder uses a WYSIWYG editor ("What You See Is What You Get"), and has features similar to common word processing applications.

Goucher's three main templates

Goucher's website uses three basic templates. Refer to the examples below to help you format and properly structure your pages. (Please note that prebuilt modules can be added to any of these templates to enhance content and provide additional design elements and flexibility.)

Standard Template

The majority of webpages on the website use this CMS template, including the page that you're on now.

Other examples:

Program Page Template

This template is used for undergraduate program landing pages.

Examples:

Note: Graduate programs use the standard template for program landing pages, as seen in this example.

Faculty Bio Template

This CMS template is used for undergraduate faculty.

Examples:

Note: Graduate faculty can include short bios within a staff listing module, as seen in this example.

Template regions

Every template has four main regions:

  • header (also referred to as the masthead)
  • top-level (or global) navigation
  • sidebar
  • main content (including introduction content)
  • footer

Depending on your permissions and the options enabled on the page, you may have the ability to edit one or more of these regions. If a region is available for you to edit, it will be marked with a green button:

The green main content button that appears on the Main Content editable region.

If you would like to edit a region but don't have access, please submit a project request. Read more about the specifics of the CMS user interface on the CMS User Interface page.

Header or Masthead

The header contains the Goucher logo, global navigation of the website, a site search, and a random display of images. In some cases, it may be possible to customize the masthead images for your department. Contact the web team to discuss these options.

Top-level or global navigation

This is the overall site navigation. The hamburger menu (three stacked horizontal lines) opens up to reveal navigation links and is visible on all device sizes (desktop, tablet, mobile). This is not an editable region.

Hamburger menu closed:

The closed top-level navigation menu, or otherwise known as the hamburger menu.

Hamburger menu open:

Main Content

This editable region holds the main content of the page. For more details on adding content to this region check out the Text and Headings section and the CMS Tutorials page.

Sidebar

The sidebar contains section navigation, call-to-action buttons, and an Instagram feed. The sidebar may also show contact information if that option has been enabled. The Faculty Bio template includes other editable content areas within the sidebar. If you would like to change the navigation or add contact info to the sidebar of a webpage, contact the web team

The sidebar includes:

  • section or page-level navigation.
  • contact information (if enabled).
  • buttons to the application and inquiry forms.
  • an Instagram feed (not shown).
