Education major
Calculus teacher, Boy’s Latin School of Maryland
Severna Park, MD
"I was on a first name basis with most of my professors. I really enjoyed the small classes that allowed a lot of individualized instruction."
What drew you to your major or field of study?
I had always been attracted to the idea of being a teacher. I originally went to school
to be an engineer, but realized that I wasn't going to be happy doing that. When I
turned my sights back to the field of teaching, math was the obvious answer.
What do you do now professionally?
I teach Calculus at Boys' Latin here in Baltimore.
What are your other interests or passions?
I coach wrestling at BL, I love to read sci-fi, and I enjoy running.
What led to your decision to transfer to Goucher? Where did you transfer from?
My mother had just finished her M.Ed. so I knew that Goucher had a well-respected
education department. I transferred from the University of Maryland College Park,
so I knew that I wanted a small school where the teachers had a vested interest in
their students and my advisor knew who I was.
What do you consider to be the important aspects of the Goucher experience?
I was on a first name basis with most of my professors. I really enjoyed the small
classes that allowed a lot of individualized instruction. I liked that my advisor
knew me outside of what classes I needed to take. I stopped by her office on a daily
basis to chat. After my experience at a huge school, the small school atmosphere was
the perfect fit for what I needed.
What advice would you give to those who are beginning the college application process
or are thinking about transferring schools?
I think the most important thing to look for in a school is to find a place where
you can see yourself being happy. Don't decide on a school based on its sports program,
or how far it is from home, or if it is where your parents want you to go. College
is a time to find yourself, to grow as a student, and to become a productive member
of society, so it should be a place where you are happy.
